Nagpur: The police on Tuesday claimed there was no evidence of rape committed on two women killed among four of a Dalit family in Khairlanji in neighbouring Bhandara district in October.
"Two postmortems conducted on the bodies failed to give any clues of possibility of criminal assault on Surekha and her daughter Priyanka Bhotmange and there is no truth of both of them being paraded naked before killing," Inspector General of Police Pankaj Gupta told reporters in Nagpur on Tuesday night.
Gupta said the first autopsy was conducted immediately after recovery of the bodies near a canal and action against a medical officer who conducted it without following the laid down procedure was under consideration.
The medical officer conducted post mortem of the women without the mandatory presence of a lady doctor, without collecting vaginal swab and not videographing it. But on an application from the lone survivor of the family, Bhaiyalal Bhotmange, the bodies were exhumed and second post mortem was conducted by following proper procedure. However, both the autopsies did not give any evidence of rape, Gupta claimed.
He said that police have arrested about 44 people in connection with the murder and all of them have been under judicial custody. Police have also arrested head constable Baban Meshram and an PSO S S Bhabar under Prevention of Atrocities Act in first week of October in connection with the case.(PTI)
